ID card renewal
The electronic identity card (CIE) can be renewed from 180 days before expiry. The new CIE is delivered home by the Istituto Poligrafico within 6 working days. Cost: €22.20. Validity: 10 years for adults, 5 years for ages 3 to 18, 3 years for children under 3.

What you need
- ✓Expired or expiring ID card (or old paper-format card)
- ✓1 recent passport-size photo (biometric standard)
- ✓Tax code (codice fiscale)
- ✓€22.20 (payable at the municipality by card or bank transfer)
Step-by-step procedure

Book an appointmentBook online on the municipality's CIE portal (agenda.interno.gov.it) or call your local registry office. Some municipalities also accept walk-ins.
Wait times can be several weeks in large cities. Book well in advance.

Go to the officeBring the expired document (or old paper ID), the passport photo and your tax code. The clerk records your fingerprints and takes a photo. Pay €22.20.
Minors must be present in person with at least one parent.

Receive the CIE at homeThe card is sent to your registered address by the Istituto Poligrafico within 6 working days. The courier leaves a notice if you are not home. Collect within 30 days.
