1
Within 8 days: Go to Police with documentsAfter arrival, go to the local Police immigration office with: D visa, passport, residence contract, financial documents. Complete the residence permit application form. Police give you a temporary receipt valid for 90 days while the permit is processed.
The temporary receipt is sufficient to work, open a bank account, drive. It's a legal document.
2
Wait 20-30 days for the final permitThe Police process your application. Usually the residence permit is ready in 20-30 days. They'll call or contact you when ready. Present your temporary receipt + ID to pick it up.
Processing times vary by Police office. Milan is faster (20 days), Naples slower (40 days). Be patient.
3
Renew residence permit 6 months before expirationResidence permit is issued for 1-2 years (depends on type: work, study, etc.). You must renew before expiration. You can request renewal 6 months before (recommended) or up to the expiration date. Process is similar to first application.
If you wait too long, you risk becoming undocumented. Don't delay renewal.
4
If you change job or situation, notify PoliceIf your permit is work-based but you change employer, notify Police within 30 days. If permit is for study but you change university, same. You don't always need to change the permit, but informing is mandatory.
Some changes require a new permit; others don't. Check with Police.
