Step-by-step procedure
1
Apply for Italian entry visaIf you are not EU/EEA/Switzerland, you must apply for a visa at the Italian Embassy or Consulate in your country. Visa types: D (long-term: work, study, family), C (short-term: tourism). For a D visa, you need an employment contract or invitation letter, financial documents, insurance coverage.
Processing times are 15-60 days depending on the Consulate. Apply at least 3 months in advance.
2
Arrive in Italy and apply for residence permitWithin 8 days of arrival, you must report your residence to the local Questura (Police). Present your visa, passport, and residence contract (rental or property). The Questura gives you a temporary receipt valid for 90 days while the permit is processed (usually 20-30 days).
The temporary receipt is already a valid travel document; you can use it to travel in Italy and abroad.
3
Get your tax codeOnce you have your residence permit, go to the Revenue Agency or the nearest Italian Consulate and request your tax code. You need your passport, visa, residence permit, and an Italian residence address.
The tax code is necessary to open a bank account, rent, work, and access public services.
4
Apply for SPID for online accessSPID (Sistema Pubblico di Identità Digitale) is the Italian digital identity for accessing online public services. You can apply online with authorized identity providers (Poste, Aranzulla, etc.). You need: tax code, valid document, email, phone number.
SPID is essential for online procedures with the Revenue Agency, INPS, etc.
5
Apply for Italian ID document (identity card or passport)If you plan to stay long-term, you can apply for an Italian Identity Card at your municipality. You need visa, residence permit, passport, photos. It is valid for 10 years and is more convenient than carrying a passport everywhere. Processing time: 5-10 days.
Many services and establishments in Italy prefer the identity card to the passport.
