EU long-term residence permit (formerly carta di soggiorno)
The EU long-term residence permit (formerly the permanent residence card) is the most stable residence status for non-EU citizens in Italy. It is issued after 5 consecutive years of legal residence and has unlimited duration (renewable every 5 years as a formality). It grants near-equal rights with Italian citizens in employment, study, social benefits and free movement in some EU countries.
What you need
- โValid passport
- โValid residence permit
- โDocumentation of 5 years continuous residence (previous permits, registry registrations)
- โProof of income: CUD, 730, tax return (income โฅ social allowance, approx. โฌ6,947/year)
- โCertificate of suitable accommodation or rental/ownership contract
- โItalian language test certificate level A2 (or Italian diploma)
- โโฌ16 revenue stamp + electronic permit fees (approx. โฌ100-200)
