Does the exemption also apply to medicines?

Chronic condition exemptions include medicines related to the condition (class A). Income exemptions, however, do not automatically cover medicines, which remain subject to the regional copayment.

What happens if I forget to declare my exemption?

You lose the right to the exemption for that service and pay the copayment. You cannot request a refund after the fact in most cases.

Is the exemption valid throughout Italy?

Condition exemptions recognised at national level are valid in all regions. Income exemptions, however, have different rules in each region: some criteria and codes differ.

Healthcare ticket exemption

Healthcare ticket exemption allows access to specialist visits and laboratory tests for free or at reduced cost. There are two main categories: income-based exemption (based on the household's financial situation) and condition-based exemption (chronic or rare diseases, disability). Step-by-step procedure

Identify your type of exemption

Main income exemptions: E01 (gross household income < €36,151.98 if over 65, or < €8,263.31 without age limit), E02-E03 for low incomes with dependent children. Condition exemptions cover over 50 chronic diseases (diabetes, hypertension, tumours, etc.) and all rare diseases recognised by the NHS. 100% civil disability grants full exemption.

Also check regional exemptions: many regions have introduced additional exemptions beyond the national ones.

Request the exemption from your ASL

Go to the CUP counter or exemption office at your ASL (or check the regional portal). For income exemptions you can apply online with SPID on many regional portals. Bring your health card, identity document and ISEE (for income) or medical documentation (for condition).

Your GP can help you identify and request the exemption for a chronic condition.

Use the exemption when booking

Once activated, the exemption is visible in the regional system and applies automatically when you book visits or tests via CUP. State the exemption code (e.g. E01, 013 for diabetes, etc.) when booking. The exemption has an expiry date: renew it on time.
