Vaccinations for adults: mandatory and recommended in Italy
The National Vaccination Prevention Plan (PNPV) 2023-2025 establishes the vaccines recommended free of charge for each age group. There are no mandatory vaccines for adults (the vaccine mandate applied to children born from 2017 onwards), but many are strongly recommended and free for specific categories. Vaccines are given at your ASL vaccination clinic or, for some, at a pharmacy.

Step-by-step procedure
1
Check the free vaccines for your age group and condition
The PNPV provides free: flu vaccine (over 60s, at-risk categories, healthcare workers — each autumn); pneumococcal (over 65s); shingles (over 65s in many regions); HPV (up to age 26 for all, up to 45 for some categories); Covid booster (elderly and fragile); tetanus (booster every 10 years for all). For workers exposed to specific risks (virological, biological) additional free vaccines apply.
Check specific availability on your region's portal: offerings vary between regions.
2
Book your vaccination
Contact your GP (they can prescribe and sometimes administer the flu vaccine) or book at the ASL vaccination clinic via CUP, phone or regional portal. For the flu vaccine, approved pharmacies can administer it directly (a doctor's prescription is required in some regions).
3
Present your vaccination record and register vaccinations
Bring your vaccination record if you have one: the ASL staff will update your status and record the vaccination in your Electronic Health Record (FSE). If you do not have a vaccination booklet, the ASL can retrieve your vaccination history from regional archives. Always keep proof of vaccinations received.
If you have lost your vaccination booklet, contact your ASL: they can retrieve data from the archives.
